Smiling Face of physiotherapist Shayne River, standing in a forest

I am a physiotherapist, yoga and clinical pilates instructor, alpine ski instructor, and multi-sport athlete from Blue Mountain, Ontario. I moved to Vancouver over a decade ago and fell in love with the west coast so deeply that I never left! When I'm not working with clients in the clinic, studio, or gym, you can find me out in the mountains biking, hiking, trail running, or skiing.

Hi, I'm Shayne River.

My Story

"Why did you become a physiotherapist?"

I grew up with parents who were both retired professional athletes, and so from a young age, it was instilled in me that the human body is strong, resilient, and capable. I became a physiotherapist to help others realize their innate strength, to educate them about their complex and fascinating bodies, and to bridge the gap between injury and optimal movement experiences.

"What is your educational background?"

I completed my Master of Physical Therapy degree at the University of British Columbia, where I also earned a Bachelor of Kinesiology, minor in Psychology. Since then, I continue to seek opportunities to expand my clinical skillset through post-graduate education. My additional training includes:

  • management of temporomandibular joint (jaw) dysfunction

  • clinical management of fitness athletes

  • running-related injury management

  • intramuscular dry needling

  • anatomical acupuncture

  • geriatric physiotherapy

  • manual therapy

  • clinical pilates

  • hatha yoga

"Who would most benefit from your style of physiotherapy?"

My approach to physiotherapy is centered around building an individual's physical resilience, functional mobility, and freedom or flow in their movement patterns. I do this through a combination of techniques - manual therapy, dry needling, movement re-training, and progressive strength training. With this multimodal approach, I am best equipped to work with individuals who are keen to take an active approach in their injury prevention or rehabilitation!
